this track appears on both album, and is a killer rockabilly track:

that video features artwork from an earlier ace records compilation rockabilly party, which i also own... and is also a great album, worth digging the crates for.

while we're on the subject, this weekend i read the goon - which is set in the 40's, and owes a lot to film noire, jack kirby, sin city and of course will eisner.
very rockabilly it is too...
so a recommended read.

that would make an excellent avatar/profile picture...

home of the blues

i am rarely stunned by anything on the internet these days, but this site is the exception.

record label design by decade... how much work goes into collating something like this?
i don't know, but i certainly appreciate all the effort!

anyhoo... what a week it's been at eightball-villa...
saturday night found me listening to the straycats whilst riding a late night train home in the dark, there have been hospital dramas, and a much awaited job-interview(yes, i got the job...), i finished-off an article for these nice people(with photography) over the last few days too... sleepless nights and stressfull days.
i wouldn't want it any other way.
there's a planned european trip coming up next month, and a planned off-the-cuff trip for the end of this month... in that i've got an idea, but no location, so i'll just grab a camera and go(deciding on a destination the day before..!).
book #2 is in production, and people are already looking forward to it(i'm looking forward to handing out complimentary copies to some of the people who are actually in it!).
and photo project #3 is in progress...

hit the road jack

rock revival
well, i headed to blackheath today - with the express purpose of finding some obscure rock&roll on vinyl, and the old place didn't let me down...
always a bit wierd going to blackheath though, it really is like heading back into the fifties... strange people stand around at bus-stops watching interlopers in their city-style hats and fancy yancy clothing... i always get eye-balled walking around this part of the 'shire!
the thrift shops are something else, the junk/detrious from the past really piles up here... you can wade through endless shakin' stevens and cliff richard albums, but eventually you will hit paydirt(see above).
the single is hank c. burnette, a cult figure on the rockabilly scene, from sweden, who changed his natural name to the more american sounding hank...
i can remember the riff at the end from my childhood, as a radio DJ used it on his rock-show(can't stop, keep rockin' kid)... and the b-side is the perenial "don't mess with my ducktail"... this appeared on the sonet label in the uk, and was, i think, eventually picked-up by sun records.
it's quite a cool single, spinning rock boogie is a quirky instrumental, with odd little sound effects throughout.
i like it a lot.
the album - looks like a neo-rockabilly cash-in, but has some excellent tracks on it(i'm listening to caldonia by james brown - which i don't recall hearing before).
6870-535...v/a: Rock Revival LP (19??)
tracklisting:
A1 Gary U.S. Bonds Quarter To Three
A2 The Contours, Do You Love Me
A3 The Sensations Let Me In
A4 The Champs, Tequila
A5 The Drifters, Save The Last Dance For Me
A6 Jerry Lee Lewis Johnny B. Goode

B1 Dicky Doo & The Don'ts Ne-Ne-Na-Na-Nu-Nu
B2 Fats Domino Introductions - Bluberry Hill
B3 Chuck Berry Memphis Tennessee
B4 James Brown Caldonia (What Makes Your Big Head Hard?)
B5 Jerry Lee Lewis Hit The Road Jack
B6 Fats Domino I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday
B7 Fats Domino So Long

that's a well-informed tracklist there.
chuffed again.
i wanted some rockin' music and blackheath didn't disapoint.
i found a polaroid camera for H. which was worth nearly £100 on amazon, as well as picking up some 1950's crockery and a red/white striped chance cordon range handkerchief vase from about 1961.
chance brothers were actually based in smethwick - and created some damn fine tableware as well as the glass in the crystal palace in 1851(which means that the vase was probably made round here).

rock island line

ok - i have no time for lonnie bleedin' donnegan, but he did kick off the punk revolution with his DIY attitude in the 50's, and he was one of the first white artists to have the good taste to pretend to be a black blues musician... so i do owe him a lot.
this compilation is pretty damn hot.
all the usual suspects are here - but playing alongside lesser obscure stuff like terry dene, marion ryan, eden kane and jim dale - who never really made it into the mainstream, and of course properly obscure tracks such as nero & the gladiators(a while back i emailed "nero" himself, now a silver surfer, and asked him if he was putting out some material on cd... he promised to let me know, but i never heard from him... which is too bad, i've been chasing their stuff for ages)... also i was keen to get my mitts on bad boy/marti wilde, wondrous place/billy fury, bongo rock/the jetstreams... and mostly a lot of other stuff i'd read about in the restless generation book, which ties in neatly with this boxset.
i won't need anything to listen to for a while - this is a great list of tracks... as i said there are well-known tracks, but put in context with lesser known material, it all feels quite fresh.
i was even nearly put off by some of the hokey artists like lulu and donnegan...
i'm sure i'll pop a few of the obscure songs on the next podcast, which incidentally has been doing well, thanks to some good people putting the word out!
recently i've been sporting some huge mutton chops(reverse goatee, i call it), it feels odd looking different, but i get fed-up looking at the same face in the mirror everyday, so it's a welcome change... now i look like a teddy boy in casual clothing now(i am not a teddy boy though - that's a whole different lifestyle.), so listening to this comp is ironic to say the least...

woodoo doll

the mystery gang from hungary - my new favourite band...
who said rock music is dead, when this comes along and makes me feel great about all the choices i've ever made in my life and the direction i went in.
i need more tattooes - planning some for next month, going to get some swallows and hopefully get my arms finished off with some line work(not the boring filled-in stuff i'd started out to get)...
the rockabilly summer!

Keep Searchin

one of those moments... iit happened to me years ago when i bought a castle records comp of singles by the zombies... they were familiar to me through the well-known tunes, but listening to the album, i realised there was more to this band that i'd realised and all off a sudden i was a zombies fan.
revelation.like when i watched a gig by the dead 60s - and it dawned on me how fcuking good they were.
all yesterday i'd had runaway by del shannon stuck in my head, courtesy of the american graffitti soundtrack album i'd been listening to - and i had a del shannon greatest hits album kicking about... i'd played it a few times, but never really listened to it, even after i'd read that johnny marr wanted the smiths to be like a del shannon song(although i always thought the smiths were more like the wild swans, but i digress).
so bang! i had a real jones for del shannon material this morning and listened to that greatest hits cd this morning... excellent stuff, over-wrought, clever and sometimes primitive, like scott walker without any pretension, with lots of dum-dum-dum paff jesus and marychain breaks... where had this artist been all my life... yet again i'm left thinking that i should have gotten into him about 20-odd years ago, and how life would have been etc....
now i'm acquiring mostly all his stuff (nearly 20 albums of various periods in his life).
maybe there's a connection with del shannon and the wild swans...

viva las vegas

ah - i noticed this on a flickr contact's page - the bloke in the video is wearing the t-shirt of the vince ray poster we have framed in the lounge above the tv... it's a very familiar image now!

a shot of rhythm and blues

vince taylor and his playboys/brand new cadillac e.p.
out today - jet black leather machine on ace records, now playing on the eightball dansette.
excellent album, good quality as it's on ace records.
great music too, primitive and sophisticated at the same time!
killer version of endless sleep on there...
that's a photo of his brand new cadillac ep above
crazy story time - i used to go on about how much vince looked like morrissey, and at the time H. was putting out a morrissey website, where it was mentioned on the forum about his resemblance... it all became a bit of an in-joke(meant with a lot of respect of course, as i am a massive fan of both singers).
so we got to see morrissey play at the NECC or NIA - i can never be bothered with whatever acronym they want to use to describe a bit concrete barn with one tiny little bar that sells shite beer in warm plastic cups... and after the support act (the very disapointing PJ Harvey - who i'd been a a fan of back in '94) and that bloody woman he always has for support(someone threw beer over her, but she carried on....), they were showing some old rock&roll videos of... vince taylor, much to the confusion of the non-rockin' audience, who thought it was morrissey or gene vincent...
H. was involved in a writing circle recently, who plotted on a story of morrissey having a baby... and there on the front cover of his new album, he's holding a baby...

whole lotta somethin'

another book bought this afternoon...
ace

"ace records - labels unlimited" blackdog publishing ISBN13: 978 1 906155 03 2

i've communicated with ace records in the past as a music fanzine editor, and they were very accommodating to me... as i'm a fan of the label and spent an awful lot of money on their albums (the mod jazz series is still a staple on the stereo...), buying ace albums always means you're buying quality - which is rare thing these days.
all killer no filler...
i even had the opportunity to take a very bad photograph of dean rudland once(see picture below), much to his (much deserved) ridicule.
i was using the famous "crap cam" my first ever digital camera... and a justified piece of shit it is too - he said i made him look like a corpse...
ad10_DeanRudland

(sums it all up really - i was in a london club with the opportunity to take photos of some of the formative heads in my musical history(the acid jazz man eddie pillar was there too...), men from the music industry who have shook hands with some of the legends of soul and r+b and rockabilly... and i have the shittiest camera in the world instead of my olympus om10 or the myriad compact film cameras that we had lying around the house doing nothing...)

my life is in this book, everything from whirlwind to booker T thru punk to blues.
if you don't know ace records - they are a re-issue catalogue label, who put out only the best and most original music from the last 40 odd years, no cheesey re-runs - just gritty soulful, jazzy, bluesy, punky rock and roll tracks from some of the best and mostly under-rated artists you may have never heard of, but will wish you had.
i'm going to enjoy this book a lot for a good few weeks of dipping in and just being there... reading about all the trials and tribulations of setting up a record stall, then a record company... meeting all the legends and lesser known musicians of some damn fine music... plus there are loads of photos of memorabilia, albums, people, places.
for a music geek like me, this is heaven.

still on a retro tip for today, i went down to the bullring market in the city, to my favourite hair-product stall in the foodhall... they sell mostly afro-caribean hair stuff, which means of course they do these beauties:
rockabilly hair product
on the left is blue magic... for the ladies, to use with hair-curling styles, so that's for the missus who's obsessed with the hair books she's got in the shop(and why not.. they are very good...), i might convince her to buy up a load of this and put it in the shop.
and on the right is the awesome royal crown... i use this stuff every day(if i "do" my hair... not if i'm wearing a hat!), basically just petroleum hair oil and olive oil...
smells like gumbo to me!
big handfuls of it on your head... feels healthy and much better than brylcreem, which has to be said is a bit too slippery and smells of old men... even if it was and still is made in birmingham.
i have a back-up tub of teh bryl for emergencies - as it's easy to get a hold of, but i'd sooner use the fish hybrid wax as it has more hold(it's basically a modern version of the old pomades without the nice smell...), and because teh cream does make you smell like your grandad which sends you down a long road of psychology....
pluko black+white is still the mother of all pomades( i may even go to northfield to get some of the pluko black+white orange lite - which they sell in a hairdresser's shop in the market there).
and if you do go for pluko btw... search out these little stalls in markets where you can buy the big ol' tub for less money than what high street chains will charge for the stingy little tub that's half the size with the false bottom (where they pack in some good ol' southern air, but no product grrrrr....)
elvis wore pluko black+white.

rockabilly hair product
i also got these other pomades when i was at the stall.
on the left is murrays pomade which i haven't used yet but it smells of toffee, and then there's sweet georgia brown... always a favourite - the red one smells of butterscotch-toffee and the purple on smells like raspberry/blackcurrant... just feels great on the hair.
why use these old products... well they have bugger all chemicals in them, so won't strip the goodness and life out of your hair... they have a lot of "give" in them, as in they don't set like glue and will keep nice and flexible - if you're in a hot club or sunny weather.
and of course another reason for wearing them is the aroma... i used to be addicted to using bodyshop coconut pomade(they called it "hairshine"....) for years as it had a cheery smell of coconut about it( the coconut smell is used in aroma therapy to make you happy btw), great little metal tins of the stuff that had the same texture as pluko(which has it's own unique play-doh smell), until they discontinued it (along with the ice blue shampoo and banana condition...).
i have heard rockabilly betties admit they they go around the rooms at a do, sniffing the air for nice pomades... sounds good to me!

today i shall be mostly listening to excellent rare buddy holly tracks...
